THE PLOT
- Does the exposition or beginning of the story catch the reader’s interest? Yes, it does. The story begins on Privet Drive where we see an old wizard (Dumbledore) who removes the light from the lamppost with a magical instrument resembling a lighter. To his side, a cat that transforms into another wizard (Professor McGonagall). They are waiting for Hagrid who arrives on a motorcycle from the sky: he is carrying a baby (Harry Potter) and they leave it on the doorstep of a house with an envelope addressed to M. and Mrs. Dursley. We learn that this is temporary and that the baby will be put into this family ''until he is ready".
- What’s the main conflict in the story? The main conflict in the story really is a battle between good and evil represented here by Harry Potter and one of the strongest and cruelest wizard called Voldemort who killed Harry's parents.
- Is there both internal and external conflict in the story? Internal conflicts include: the incomfort Harry feels with the Dursleys; the questioning about the death of his parents and the fact that he is an orphan, that his parents were famous wizards, that as a baby he repelled Voldemort; the insecurities about his wizardry abilities - he is expected to fight Voldemort and evil in general, he doesn't know if he can do that. External conflicts include: his difficult relationship with everyone who represents evil, Draco Malfoy, his teacher Severus Snape, Professor Quirrell, etc.
- Does tension build in the story? If so, in what way? Yes, tension builds right from the start with Harry living with the Dursleys. This tension diminishes when Hagrid saves him and takes him to his new life at Hogwarts. However, the tension starts again and moves gradually as Harry goes through a series of hurdles that bring him closer to Voldemort.
- What is the climax of the story? When we discover that Professor Quirrell is haunted by the spirit of Voldemort.
- Is the dramatic structure effective? Yes, because the spectator is taken through a series of adventures or obstacles that Harry has to go through. Until the very end of the movie, we are sitting on the edge of our seat: the dramatic structure is that gripping.
- Does the story have a close ended or an open ending? It has an open ending because we are getting ready for the second movie. At the end, we see Harry going back to the Dursley for the summer vacation. However, it is understood that Harry and his friends, Ron and Hermione, are expected to return for the second year.
- Is the plot plausible? Yes, we know we are in an imaginary world but the plot, along with the other literary elements, are so well developed that we not only believe the plot but we would secretly wish that we were a part of it.
- How important is the plot in the story? Without the plot, there would be no movie so I think it is pretty clear that the plot is one of the most important literary elements.
